Carson Pass Management Area - Sites

Fourth of July Lake

Topographical map image showing the locations of six campsites at Fourth of July Lake.

Descriptive Locations:

  • Site 1 is located at the far side of the lake and between the lake and the outlet stream. Do not cross the stream to camp. This site has a great view of Summit City Canyon and views to the south.
  • Sites 2 and 3 are set in the trees between the lake and the trail. These two sites are a bit hard to find, but keep looking.
  • Sites 4, 5 and 6 are easier to find as they are in an open area near the west end of the lake. Site 6 sets back away from the lake near the base of a rocky slope. Sites 4 and 5 sit on the other side of the clearing in some trees. Sites 4, 5 and 6 all have nice views of the lake.

Round Top Lake

Topographical map image showing the locations of six campsites at Round Top Lake.

Descriptive Locations:

  • Sites 1 to 4 are in a line parallel to the trail. All these sites are on the side of the trail away from the lake.
  • Site 1 is located to the right of the trail as one crosses the outlet stream. Head to your right as you cross the stream. It is somewhat open with a grove of trees to your back as you face the lake.
  • Sites 2 and 3 are located in line with site 1 if you hike parallel to the trail. These sites are much farther apart than the map would indicate. Site 3 is located near the top of the gentle slope.
  • Site 5 is located to the right of site 3 down a slope away from the lake on a flat with a grand view to the west. Even though this is an open site, it offers a real sense of wilderness as it sits isolated from the others.
  • Site 4 is located in alignment with sites 1, 2 and 3 down a slope. It sets in a grove of trees.
  • Site 6 is the only site that is located on the lakeside of the trail. This site is at the far side of the lake as you hike in from Carson Pass. This site sets on a flat area away from the lake but still offers a view of the lake.

Winnemucca Lake

Topographical map image showing the locations of three campsites at Winnemucca Lake.

Descriptive Locations:

  • Site 1 is located on the right side of the trail as one approaches the lake from Carson Pass. If you can see the lake you have gone too far. The site sets on the top of a small ridge with some trees. It provides good views to the west.
  • Sites 2 and 3 are located to the left of the trail. When you begin to see the lake, look for a small footpath to your left through the rocks. Work your way to your left staying high above the lake. Site 3 sets in a small grouping of trees with a good view of the lake.
  • Site 2 is located higher up the slope from site 3 and a bit to the left as one is looking at site 3. Site 2 is located in an open area with a view overlooking the lake and Round Top mountain.
