The roads and trails on the forest are signed with vertical posts with symbols that indicate the type of use allowed and the degree of difficulty of the road or trail.

ROUTE MARKERS

The route markers shown below identify the three types of transportation systems on the Eldorado National Forest. These markers are posted at the entrance of primary and secondary roads and OHV trailheads.

Eldorado National Forest System road numbers contain the letter "N" while Forest System trail numbers contain the letter "E" (ex: 12N45 or 17E23).

Markers Description
primary route marker Primary route markers indicate routes recommended for passenger vehicle travel. Only street legal vehicles may travel on these routes.
vertical route marker Vertical route markers indicate unimproved roads that are maintained for high clearance vehicles such as pick-ups and 4-wheel drive vehicles. Passenger vehicles and Off-Highway Vehicles can be encountered on these roads. If you choose to travel on these low maintenance roads, be prepared to encounter rocks, boulders, road washouts, downed trees, and brush encroaching on roadways.
ohv route marker OHV route markers indicate OHV trails. On these markers you will find signs and decals designating the type of vehicle recommended, level of difficulty, and system number which corresponds to a map. Markers with signs or decals with a red slash means the route is closed to that type of use.
