Stream Monitoring with Local Schools

Photo of three girls filtering soil for aquatic critters. Stream monitoring with students from four local high schools has been both a teaching tool and a helpful volunteer effort for the Eldorado National Forest. Students work alongside fishery biologists and hydrologists to collect data on rivers and creeks of the American River watershed. Each waterway is a living, dynamic environment altered by physical, biological and chemical conditions, as well as human activities. By monitoring the stream for these attributes over time, these students are assisting scientists with developing management decisions for the aquatics of the watershed.

Students from El Dorado, Oakridge, Union Mine, and Golden Sierra High Schools have helped with the monitoring on Jones Fork Silver Creek, Big Silver Creek, South Fork Rubicon River, and Wench Creek. Sixth grade science students from Gold Trails Elementary School also monitored South Fork Long Canyon Creek.
