Sly Guard Cabin

The Sly Guard Cabin is located in the beautiful Eldorado National Forest on Sly Park Road near Sly Park Reservoir. The cabin was constructed in the early 1940’s by the Forest Service as living quarters for the Sly Park Rangers or "guards".

Specifics

Number of People: 1 to 12 (4 in cabin). Availability is from early June to mid-October.
Fee: $65.00 per night.
Utilities: The cabin has electricity, water, wood stove and propane wall heater.
Water: Hot and cold water. The bathroom has a flush toilet and a tub/shower combination.
Season: Summer only. Availability is from early June to mid-October. Reservations can be made 180 days in advance of stay. The Cabin cannot be reserved on Monday nights due to cleaning/maintenance.
Other:

  • You can bring pets, but they are not allowed in the building. Pets need to be on a leash at all times while at the Sly Guard Cabin and grounds. As a courtesy to others please clean up after your pet.
  • Off Highway Vehicles cannot be operated at the Sly Guard Cabin grounds and should remain in their trailers. OHVs are allowed on designated Forest System roads and trails only. Please contact the Ranger Station for further information and maps.
  • Smoking is not allowed in the cabin. Please properly dispose of all smoking litter.
  • Phone is located in the cabin kitchen and is for local and emergency calls only.

Activities: Boating, kayaking, hiking, swimming, picnicking, gold panning, fishing and camping fill the spring, summer and fall months in the Eldorado National Forest. The cabin is close to many attractions including Sly Park Reservoir (Jenkinson Lake), Apple Hill, Historic Downtown Placerville, the historic mining town of Coloma and many wineries. Interior:

The Sly Guard Cabin is 600 sq. ft., sleeps four people and has rustic charm with a kitchen, living room, bathroom and one bedroom. There is a phone in the kitchen and a TV and DVD player in the living room.

Sleeping: Accommodations include two single beds in the bedroom and a full size futon in the living room.

Cooking: The kitchen has a four person table, double sink, hot and cold running water, microwave, electric stove and refrigerator and a basic assortment of pots, pans, dishes and utensils (if you are not sure bring your own). No open flames or backpacking stoves are permitted inside the building. A charcoal type barbeque is in the mudroom for use outside the building. You will need to pack out your own garbage.

Cleaning supplies are stored in the mud room.

Exterior:

The Sly Guard Cabin grounds are enclosed by a split cedar fence and is large enough to accommodate two tents, one RV/trailer/camper and two boats, vehicles should be limited to three cars (including tow vehicles) and only park on gravel areas and not on vegetation. RV/Trailers: There is no water, septic or electric hookups on the Sly Guard grounds. The closest RV dump station is at Jenkinson Lake entrance.

The cabin grounds include a picnic table, horseshoe pit, clothesline, food preparation table and group fire ring. Small campfires are allowed in the provided fire ring when restrictions are not in effect. Ask for current fire restrictions when you pick up your permit.

Other Information

Sly Park Environmental Education School is located across the street. Guided daily nature walks are conducted on the trail adjacent to the cabin. Please respect this authorized use.

Sly Park Resort Store is at the entrance to Jenkinson Lake (approximately 2 miles from cabin) and includes a small store, restaurant/bar, pay phone, gas and fishing supplies.
