Travel Directions
Robbs Peak is located northeast of Placerville and is 6,686 feet above sea level. You can reach this area by traveling east on Highway 50 to Riverton (20 miles east of Placerville). Turn left on Ice House road and go 23 miles to the Robbs Peak Road turn-off (left turn).
Summer Access: Once the hard, dirt surfaced road is dry, the bottom gate is opened for the summer. This 3-mile long road is accessible with most passenger vehicles. The upper gate, which is about 1/3 of a mile from the Hut, is closed so only authorized vehicles can drive to the Hut. There are combination locks on the gate and the door to the Hut.
Winter Access: Primary access to Robbs Hut during winter and early spring is by hiking, snowshoeing, or skiing, depending on snow conditions, as there is a gate at the bottom of the road which is always locked in the winter (on Ice House Road 3 miles from the Hut). Parking is at the road junction with Ice House Road.
Winter Safety: Winter access is not guaranteed as weather is unpredictable. As Robbs Peak Road is never plowed, always plan on using winter recreation equipment ie: snowshoes or skiis during the winter months. The elevation gain from where you park your car to the bunkhouse is over 1,000 feet. Depending on your mode of travel, weather conditions, unconsolidated snow depths, and your physical condition and ability it can take between 2-6 hours to reach the hut. The road is marked with blue diamonds; however do not rely on the markings alone. Use of map and compass skills may be necessary to locate the hut under certain conditions. Be prepared in case of emergencies and notify family or friends of your trip and when you expect to return.
Permit and Key/Combination: Renters must contact Pacific Ranger District at 530-647-5415 to arrange for permit, access, check-in, and find out current conditions.
