Travel Directions

The Chalet is located at Loon Lake, northeast of Placerville and is at 6,378 feet above sea level. You can reach this area by traveling east on Highway 50 to Ice House Road (8.5 miles east of Pollock Pines), then north on Ice House Road 28 miles and take the right fork. Travel 5 miles to Loon Lake.

Summer Access: The Ice House Road is a paved forest road.

Winter Access: As roads are generally icy, vehicles should carry chains and be serviced for cold temperatures. Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) plows the road on an intermittent basis. Roads usually are plowed on weekends or holidays, but not guaranteed. Winter snow depth averages 3 to 8 feet; snow may fall from September through May.

Winter Safety: Because of the unpredictable weather and road conditions, there is no guaranteed access to the Chalet. Be prepared in case of emergencies and notify family or friends of your trip and when you expect to return. In the event that a storm could snow you in, be prepared to stay until the road is plowed.

Permit and Key: Renters must contact Pacific Ranger District at 530-647-5415 to arrange for permit, access, check-in, and find out current conditions.
