Eldorado National Forest fire restrictions will be removed at midnight on Tuesday, October 6, 2009. Visitors will once again be able to use wood, charcoal, or gas fires or stoves outside of developed campgrounds as long as they possess a valid California Campfire Permit and follow the permit regulations. (10/09)
The US Forest Service announced today that prescribe burning in the Eldorado National Forest will begin again this fall when the air quality, humidity, temperature, wind, and fuel moisture are right. The Forest Service says the Van Vleck Meadow Restoration project may be one of the first projects to be implemented. This 168 acre project is located in Aspen Meadow and Upper and Lower Van Vleck Meadows, 7 miles north of Ice House Reservoir. (10/02)
A draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the reforestation of
approximately 4,320 acres of Eldorado National Forest lands burned in 2004 in the Fred’s Fire near
Kyburz is available for public review and comment. The Environmental Protection Agency published a
Notice of Availability (NOA) for the DEIS in the Federal Register on September 11, 2009. The Forest
Service will accept comments on the DEIS for 45 days from that date. The DEIS and related
information is available on the Eldorado National Forest website located at www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado.
A CD of the Freds Fire Reforestation DEIS can be requested from the Forest Supervisor’s Office in
Special fire restrictions will be implemented in the Eldorado National Forest beginning August 4. Eldorado National Forest Supervisor Ramiro Villalvazo issued a forest order that restricts campfires and charcoal barbeques to designated recreation sites and prohibits other fire related activities until the end of fire season. The fire restrictions affect the entire Eldorado National Forest including wilderness areas. (08/09)
New day use fees will be charged at several popular Eldorado National Forest recreation areas. Beginning May 22, 2009, a six dollar per day use fee will be charged at Stumpy Meadows and Ice House Reservoir picnic areas and boat ramps, and at boat ramps for Union Valley and Loon Lake Reservoirs. The fees will pay for the cost of operating and maintaining these recreation facilities. (05/09)
The U.S. Forest Service will be hosting an Open House for the public to learn about upcoming projects and activities in the Eldorado National Forest near the communities of Pollock Pines, Sly Park, and Grizzly Flat. Please join our staff at the Sierra Springs Fire Station located at 5602 Sly Park Road, Pollock Pines, CA 95726 on Saturday April 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. rain or shine. The Eldorado National Forest Interpretive Association is providing refreshments and there will be great activities for the kids to enjoy. (04/09)
Designated dirt roads and trails in the Eldorado National Forest will reopen to motorized use on April 16, ending the wet weather seasonal closure that began on January 1, announced Acting Forest Supervisor Jeffrey Vail. The Forest Service closed these routes to protect water quality, prevent erosion, and reduce damage to roads and trails. (04/09)
The Forest Service is extending the current closure of Eldorado National Forest dirt roads and trails until April 15 since many of the routes are too muddy for vehicles to drive on. Two weeks prior to that date, the Forest Service says it will reassess the conditions and the weather forecasts to determine if lifting the closure is still reasonable. (03/09)
Its been almost a year since the Forest Service designated routes where people can drive motorized vehicles in the Eldorado National Forest. In April, the four Eldorado National Forest District Rangers will each host a day when people can drop-in at their offices to talk about the designated travel system. The open houses will be hosted at the Georgetown and Amador Ranger Stations on April 18 and at the Placerville Ranger Station on April 25. (03/09)
The US Forest Service is seeking nominees for two 15-member Resource Advisory Committees (RAC) that will evaluate and recommend projects and funding to improve Eldorado National Forest watersheds and facilities. One RAC will recommend projects in El Dorado County and the other will recommend projects in Amador County. The advisory committees will be appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture and will represent a wide variety of interests. Applications for the RAC can be obtained on the Eldorado National Forest website at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado and need to be submitted by April 20, 2009. (03/09)
U.S. Forest Service Chief Abigail Kimbell announced today the Agency’s plan to participate in the nation’s economic recovery program. The Forest Service has received $1.15 billion from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. (03/09)
