SR-74 Safety Improvement Project

In February 2007, Caltrans began a three-year, 3.3- mile Safety Improvement Project on State Route 74. With Safety as Caltrans’ number one priority, the goal of the project is to reduce accidents and to save lives.

As of June 2008, the project that begins just east of the San Juan Canyon bridge and ends at the Orange/Riverside County line is on schedule and about 75 percent complete.

The road closes nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. with one lane open through the work area and flagging operations during the day. Occasionally, the road is open at night during long holiday weekends and when serving as an alternate route due construction work on SR-91 at Green River Road.

For more information, contact the Caltrans Hotline at (800) 724-0353.

ABANDONED MINE CLEANUP AND SAFETY CLOSURES

Abandoned mines are dangerous and should be left alone. Many backcountry areas in Southern California were historically used for mining. It is not know where all of these mining operations historically occurred. The Forest continues to clean up known abandoned mine materials left behind from past mining operations as funding and staffing permit.
