Leadore Ranger District
FIRE CREW
Jay Hulse = Foreman
The
Leadore Fire Crew is a small versatile crew. We staff one Type 6
Engine (2001 Ford 550 with a Model 51, 300 gallon slip-on unit)
with an older 200 gallon slip-on unit on the crew six-pack for backup.
We maintain a small fire cache that is capable of stocking 3 Type
IV Engines and a 20-person crew after the needs of the Ranger District
have been met.
The Leadore Ranger District has a relatively low number of fires
annually (only 5 in 2001). This provides opportunities for the
crew to get off-District assignments. Though 2001 was a relatively
slow fire year, members of the crew all had at least two off-District
assignments, mainly as hand or engine crew members. We don't get
a lot of fire on the Ranger District, but we try to give our fire
crew members as much fire experience as possible.
When
not on a fire assignment, the Fire Crew does a variety of project
work. We build fences and collect GIS information
for range management, assist the recreation section with campground
and trail maintenance, and build and maintain exclosures for wildlife.
We are responsible for maintenance on the
Ranger Station, and for preparation of units for prescribed fire.
In short, we do a variety of work that require everything from a chainsaw to a GPS unit.
