Welcome to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. You are about
to embark on a trip to a very special place.
The Sawtooth Wilderness will impress you with
rugged peaks and many crystal clear lakes. You will find opportunities
for many different kinds of experiences at all skill levels. But
before you begin your trip, please take the time to learn how to
help protect this special area by minimizing your impact.
The Sawtooth Wilderness is enjoyed by tens of
thousands of people each year, engaging in a variety of activities.
Consequently, most visitors are unaware of the impacts they leave.
With the increasing demand for the solitude and beauty that Wilderness
provides, even the smaller impacts can begin to take their toll.
Proper planning, equipment and backcountry etiquette can do
a great deal to preserve our Wilderness areas. Taking the time to
learn and abide by Wilderness regulations
and the Leave No Trace principles
will make a difference, offer you a more enjoyable trip.
Take time to look over this site before you embark and practice
minimum impact techniques. It is up to those of us who love our
wildlands to dedicate ourselves to learning how we can be lighter
on the land, knowing the area regulations and spreading this knowledge

Sawtooth Wilderness Regulations
Over the past several years the Forest Service, permittees, and
the general public were involved in drafting a new management plan
for the Sawtooth Wilderness. As a result some new
rules and regulations apply.
