The weather patterns are to continue according to the National Weather Service – so more rainy conditions for the next week. Local river levels have spiked and wading any river is considered dangerous. Warm Springs Road is now open, but muddy conditions still exist entering Board Ranch. Despite the wet conditions, all campgrounds in the Wood River Complex will be open this week and most campgrounds over Galena Summit in the Stanley area should be in full operation. The Alturas Lake complex and Iron Creek Campground are open.

TIMBER SALES Personal use firewood permits are for sale at the Sawtooth National Recreational Area Headquarters, the Stanley Ranger Station and the Redfish Lake Visitors Center now. There is a 10 cord limit for each individual household. The minimum purchase is two cords at $25.00; each additional cord is $12.50. The Sawtooth NRA is once again offering two free cords of firewood which can be gathered from Decker Flat Road. A permit is needed to cut the free wood. The permit map outlines regulations and will identify the areas open to firewood gathering. Be sure to tag the load. Keep in mind that there may be muddy and wet areas, as well as falling timber.

ROADS UPDATE

All roads in the Wood River Complex are open. Be careful of rolling rocks on Highway 75 up near the Galena Summit. Most of the roads over the Galena Summit are opened with the exception of the following:

  • 4th of July – closed at ½ mile before the trailhead.
  • Slate Creek Road open but rough.
  • Smiley Creek – open - road work completed.
  • Alturas Lake Road – open to the end of the paved road.
  • Frenchman’s Creek – open two miles.
  • FS #210 (Decker Flats to Redfish Lake access road) – Open.

  • Beaver Creek Road is closed.
  • Chemeketan Road is closed.
  • Landmark Road from Bear Valley to Warm Lake is closed

  • Driving on muddy roads can make deep ruts.
  • Driving on wet roads or around snow banks can lead to expensive tow truck bills.
  • There may not be a good turn around and you may need to back up a considerable distance.
  • Have fun in the woods, but, please have patience and turn around if the roads are muddy or wet.

 Trail Updates

  • Trails are open but very wet.

  • Please use good judgment and turn around where trail is wet or snow - covered.
  • Best hiking in the Sawtooth Valley is up and around Redfish Lake.

  • Fisher Creek Loop and Williams Creek Trail are snow covered and closed for another week until they dry out.

 Campground Update

  • Campgrounds on the Yankee Fork are open with water.
  • Campgrounds in the Cape Horn area are open but water is not available.
