Description: Visible view of the western United States. The west is mostly clear this evening. Several smoke plumes from fires in Idaho and Oregon can be seen in the 5:38 image. Note the increase in smoke from the fires in the 1/2 hour between the images. This increase is due to a wind direction change from an approaching front.

Note the smoke coming from the Concow fire in northern California. Due to the time of day only the smoke was seen from the fire. Reflected sunlight off of water bodies, low fire temperatures and the Earth's surface being warmed by the sun all  prevent the fires from being distinguished from the background in AVHRR channel 3.

The front that was in Oregon and Northern Idaho yesterday evening has now moved into southeastern Idaho. There is a high pressure system in New Mexico causing Monsoon moisture to begin to come up from Arizona.

Several of the fires have been receiving rain. Due to cloud cover and rain the fires are cooler, resulting in fire activity not being seen with AVHRR band 3 .
