Appeals and Litigation

which may be subject to appeal (request to a higher authority
for administrative review of a decision). Click here to

October 1, 2006. You will view these on the National Appeals
web site, which will open in a new browser window.

Pre-Decisional Objections
Proposed Forest Service Decisions regarding hazardous fuel
reduction projects ar subject to a "pre-decisional" review
process. In these cases, the public may submit comments on
the project for consideration prior to the final decision being
signed. Click here to

Secure Rural Schools
On October 3, 2008, H.R. 1424 became Public Law (P.L.) 110-343. Section 601 in Division C of H.R. 1424 reauthorized and amended the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 as originally enacted in P.L. 106-393. More than $500 million for FY 2008 will be available to 41 states and Puerto Rico for improvements to public schools, road maintenance and stewardship projects under this act.
Legacy Roads and Trails Projects - FY 2011-13
The Legacy Roads and Trails program funds urgently needed road decommissioning and road or trail repair and maintenance including aquatic organism passage. Project selection is criteria based with an emphasis towards areas where roads may be contributing to water quality problems.
Planning Rule
The collaborative development of a new planning rule has been in full-swing since the publication of the Notice of Intent in December 2009. The Forest Service has received more than 26,000 written comments on the notice, more than 300 blog comments and hosted more than 40 public meetings throughout the country. The agency is currently finalizing the proposed rule with an expected publication date by December 2010. Upon publication, the Forest Service will offer a formal comment period and will host additional public meetings and collaborative opportunities for the public to discuss the rule. Please visit Washington Office Ecosystem Management Coordination for more information.
Forest Plans
In addition to following Forest Service directives, each Forest Service unit has a land and resource management plan (Forest Plan) under which the Forests and Grasslands manage their resources.
Other direction, guidance, and influence on how our National Forests and Grasslands implement Forest and Grassland Plans to manage resources to meet the Forest Service mission can be found on the Washington Office Ecosystem Management Coordination web site.
