Welcome
The Dixie National Forest, with headquarters in Cedar City, Utah,
occupies almost two million acres and stretches for about 170 miles
across southern Utah. The largest National Forest in Utah, it straddles
the divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado River.
Motorized Travel Plan Implementation
The Dixie National Forest will be implementing the Motorized Travel Plan decision over the next several years. Users on the Forest can expect to see many changes on the ground as previously available routes are closed and signs are improved to designate routes in the system. Cross country travel (or travel off of this designated system) is no longer allowed on the Forest. Those individuals found riding off the designated trails will be cited for violations. While the Forest is engaged in closing routes and signing the designated system, the Forest still provides unparalleled opportunities for motorized recreation - YOU CAN GET THERE FROM HERE. It will take many years to complete implementation of this project. If you want to know more about the project or help out with implementation, contact Nick Glidden at (435)865-3700. Read more...
Power Line Projects
The Dixie National Forest is the lead forest for three power line projects that will potentially impact all Utah forests. The Forest Service is not the lead agency; BLM is the lead agency. Click the links below to learn more about each project.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act assigns the Forest Service a key role in creating thousands of private sector jobs for Americans in areas of our nation that are most impacted economically. America's forest and grasslands are a cornerstone of our nation's natural resource conservation as well as the economic security for America's citizens. The Forest Service is uniquely qualified to meet this challenge.
These jobs and this work will provide multiple benefits for people, such as clean and abundant water, through restoring forest health and reducing risks from insects, disease and wildfires near communities. This investment in jobs will also speed our ability to use technology to convert wood to energy and help these lands adapt to a changing climate. Read More....
Secure Rural Schools
On October 3, 2008, H.R. 1424 became Public Law (P.L.) 110-343. Section 601 in Division C of H.R. 1424 reauthorized and amended the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 as originally enacted in P.L. 106-393. More than $500 million for FY 2008 will be available to 41 states and Puerto Rico for improvements to public schools, road maintenance and stewardship projects under this act.
Local Projects
Oil and Gas Draft Environmental Impact Statement - The Draft EIS identifies Dixie National Forest lands that could be made available for oil and gas leasing in accordance with the Mineral Leasing Act and is now releasing for public comment the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
Dixie National Forest Motorized Travel Planning Project
After many years of planning and public collaboration, the Dixie National Forest has completed a motorized travel plan. The plan established a system of designated motorized travel routes across the forest and closes the rest of the forest lands to cross-country (overland, off-trail) travel. About 2,300 miles of motorized routes will be available for public use. It is expected that implementation of the plan will provide for better natural resource protection, provide legal access, and improve recreation management. The plan is available for review at http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/dixie/projects/MTP/. It can also be viewed at your local Forest Service office.
Land Management Planning for the Dixie and Fishlake National Forests
The Forest Plan provides management direction for the many multiple uses of a national forest. Some of those multiple uses include: outdoor recreation, range, timber, watershed, fish and wildlife, minerals, wilderness, and cultural resources. The forest resources are to be used in a sustainable manner to provide a variety of products and use opportunities for current and future generations.

Partnerships
The National Forest Foundation (NFF) is the congressionally-chartered nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service. The NFF and its grassroots partners adress key challenges to the health of our National Forests and Grasslands. Together, we work on solutions in community-based forestry, recreation, wateshed restoration, and wildlife habitat.
The NFF also brings together all of you who are concerned about our National Fores ts. The Friends of the Forest™ program helps you enjoy, protect, and participate in the conservation work in our beloved National Forests.

2009 was a great year for the Dixie National Forest. We accomplished a lot of meaningful work on National Forest System lands. The Annual Report 2009 is our way of sharing some of these achievements.
Short Hikes and Trails - Recreation activities on the Dixie National Forest range from hiking alpine mountains and slot canyons to mountain biking slickrock and singletrack trails, to riding all terrain vehicles along the Great Western Trail.
