As of November 6, 2009 the fall colors in the Intermountain Region are gone. Leaves have fallen in all but a few remote areas, due to early winter storms. This will likely be the last fall color report for 2009.

Some of the recent reports for fall color are the following:

Idaho

Boise National Forest

Colors are falling in the valley now but there might be a few visible areas left to view.

Caribou-Targhee National Forest

The fall colors on the Forest are gone. This time of year about all that is left is the faded yellow and green on the aspen trees.

Payette National Forest

Fall colors peaked last week, and have begun to fade and fall. While some areas may have lingering color, the majority of the forest has begun its last decent of the fall colors trail.

Sawtooth National Forest

Colors are past their peak, which happened very quickly. The season was short, with colors changing straight from green to brown in most areas. A few scattered pockets are likely visible.

Nevada

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

Because of the slightly warmer climate, Nevada tends to be a few weeks behind the rest of the Region. Most areas peaked last week and are starting to drop off their remaining leaves. Visitors may have a few more days or weeks of visible color before the snow settles in.

Utah

Leaves on all forests have dropped, with lingering pockets in the more Southern areas of the state. Snow has overtake most of the mountains as well as the valleys.

Wyoming

Bridger-Teton National Forest

As has been the case for a month now, snow has overtaken the mountains. Leaves fell early this year in Wyoming, and have ceased to have color for nearly a month now.

Don’t miss out on the natural beauty of the Intermountain Region and enjoy your national forests.
Remember take only pictures and leave only footprints.

The Intermountain Region experiences wonderful autumn colors. This page is updated weekly during the fall season. A photo gallery has been put together for your enjoyment. The fall color photos were taken by Forest Service employees throughout the Region, as well as public forest visitors.

Visit us again for updated colorful photos, as well as to see which areas are recommended for viewing a wonderful, picturesque work of nature.

The Intermountain Region is a spectacular place to be in the fall. Get out and enjoy the beauty of your National Forests.

Utah Skies has submitted some wonderful photos in the past. You can visit their web site at http://www.utahskies.org. If you have fall colors photos you would like displayed on our web site, e-mail them to Jody Rose.

It is wise to obtain highway and weather information before leaving home and be prepared for winter weather while in the mountains. Many unpaved forest roads are quite slippery when wet, while some clay based roads simply become impassable.

Visit the Washington Office web site for additional information on viewing fall colors throughout the country.
