Big Holes

Thousand Springs

Located approximately 10 miles from Kelly Canyon Ski Area and can be accessed from Forest Service Road #218 (Kelly Canyon) and taking Forest Service Road #651 (Moody Swamp) to the trailhead. Thousand Springs #077, 3 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Hilton Creek #067 (motorized), Prospect Peak #121 (motorized), and Castle Lake #076 (motorized).

Big Burns Creek

Located approximately 9 miles from Kelly Canyon Ski Area and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #206 (South Fork Snake) and turning off on Forest Service Road #210 (Big Burns). Big Burns Creek # 068, 6 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Hells Hole #070 (motorized), Little Burns Canyon #071 (motorized), and Coalmine Canyon #064 (motorized).

Blacks Canyon

Located approximately 8 miles form the Kelly Canyon Ski area and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #206 (South Fork Snake) to the trailhead. Blacks Canyon #074, 8 miles long, is a motorized trail and takes you to the top of Chicken Peak and Liars Peak. Connecting Trails are Fleming Canyon # 079 (motorized), Little Burns Creek # 071 (motorized), and Three Peaks # 075 (motorized).

New bridges were built the summer of 2005 to improve stream quality and to provide a safer trail. A new Off Highway Vehicle cattle guard will be installed next field season.

South Fork Rim

Located approximately 8 miles from Kelly Canyon Ski Area and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #206 (South Fork Snake). South Fork Rim #155, 5.2 miles long, is a motorized trail. This trail runs along the ridge of the South Fork of the Snake River and has some beautiful views of the valley and the Snake River. Connecting trail is Blacks Canyon #074 (motorized) and Dry Canyon # 080 (motorized).

West Pine Creek

Located approximately 10 miles East of Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking Hwy 31 and taking Forest Service Road #230 (West Pine Creek). West Pine Creek #078, 7.2 miles long, takes you to the top of Liars Peak, and is a non-motorized trail. Connecting trail is Trail Canyon #069 (non-motorized).

Wolverine Creek

Located approximately 3 1/2 miles from Kelly Canyon Ski Area and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #206 (South Fork Snake). Wolverine Creek #082, 3.3 miles long, is a motorized trail. This trail will connect you to Forest Service Road #218 (Limekiln Canyon) or you could take Morning Glory Mine #139 (motorized) to Forest Service Road #342 (Morning Glory Mine).

Hawley Gulch

Trailhead is located at the Tablerock campground which can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #217 (Table Rock Canyon). Hawley Gulch #031, 2.5 miles long, is a motorized trail. This trail will connect you to Forest Service Road #218 (Limekiln Canyon) or you could take the connecting trail Lookout Mountain #131 (motorized) to the top of Lookout Mountain.

Sheep Driveway

Located approximately 9 miles from Kelly Canyon Ski Area and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #218 (Limeklin Canyon). You can also access this trail by taking Hwy 31 to the trail. Sheep Driveway #051 is 28.5 miles long. North of Hwy 31 is a motorized trail except when the trail crosses Thousand Springs #077 for approximately 2 1/2 miles and when the trail meets North Pine #216 (Teton-Basin Ranger District) for approximately 3 1/2 miles. South of Hwy 31 is a non-motorized trail. Connecting trails North of the Hwy 31 are Carlton Cutoff #060 (motorized), Hilton Creek #067 (motorized), and Spencer Mountain #065 (motorized). Connecting trails South of Hwy 31 are Fogg Hill #150 (non-motorized), North Fork Fork Palisades Creek #052 (non-motorized), and East fork Palisades Creek #150 (non-motorized).

Palisades

Rainey Creek

Located outside of Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #257 (Lower Rainey Creek). Rainey Creek #115, 2.3 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Spring Canyon #116 (motorized), Corral Canyon# 086 (motorized), North Fork Rainey Creek #089 (motorized) and South Fork Rainey Creek #090 (motorized).

North/South Rainey Creek

Located off of either the North Fork Rainey Creek #089 or the South Fork Rainey Creek #090. North/South Rainey Creek #066, 2.1 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Spencer Mountain #065 (motorized), Sheep Driveway #051 (non-motorized) and Hunts Corral #081 (non-motorized).

Hunts Corral

Located 10 miles Northwest from Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking Lower Palisades Creek #084 to Upper Palisades Creek #085 and veering North on North Fork Palisades Creek #052 to Hunts Corral #081. Hunts Corral, 3.7 miles long, is a non-motorized trail. Connecting trails are Thompson Peak #091 (non-motorized) and Fogg Hill #150 (non-motorized).

Palisades Creek

Located approximately 6 miles south of Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking Hwy 26 to County Road 255 to the trailhead. Lower Palisades Creek # 084, 5.7 miles long, is a non-motorized trail. This trail offers wildlife viewing as well as taking you to the Lower Palisades lake and the connecting trail of Upper Lake Bench #163 which will take you to the Upper Palisades Lake. Upper Palisades Creek #085, 3.1 miles long, is a non-motorized trail. Fishing from the Lakes is a popular recreation for hikers and Day Users. Connecting trails are Lake Canyon #206 (non-motorized), Chicken Spring Canyon #153 (non-motorized), Upper Lake Bench #163 (non-motorized) and Ice Cove #093 (non-motorized).

Palisades Creek Trail

Upper Lake

Located approximately 10 miles Southwest of Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking the Palisades Creek #084 trail to the Upper Lake #112 trail. This trail is 2.0 miles long and a non-motorized trail. This trail offers beautiful views of Waterfall Canyon and borders the Upper Palisades Lake. Connecting trails are Upper Lake Bench #163 (non-motorized), Waterfall Canyon #099 (non-motorized) and Vacation Canyon #118 (non-motorized).

Upper Lake Bench

Located approximately 10 miles Southwest of Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking the Palisades Creek #084 trail to the Upper Lake Bench #163 trail. This trail is 1.6 miles long and is a non-motorized trail. Connecting trails are Upper Lake #112 (non-motorized), Waterfall Canyon #099 (non-motorized), Vacation Canyon #118 (non-motorized), and Dry Canyon # 104 (non-motorized).

Waterfall

Located 12 miles Southwest of Swan Valley, ID and can be accessed by taking the Upper Lake Bench #163 trail. You could also access it by taking Forest Service Road #260 (Sheep Creek) to Sheep Creek trail # 096 and then to Waterfall Crest #109 to Waterfall # 099. This trail is a non-motorized trail and is approxiametly 3 1/2 miles long.

Big Elk Creek

Located approximately 15 miles Southeast of Swan Valley, ID on Highway 26 and can be accessed through the Campground. Big Elk Creek #097, 5 miles long, crosses the Wyoming State line and is a non-motorized trail. Connecting trails are Dry Canyon #125 (non-motorized), Box Canyon # 126 (non-motorized), Cabin Creek # 101 (non-motorized), Siddoway Fork #102 (non-motorized), and South Fork # 054 (non-motorized).

North Indian Creek

This trail is located 5 miles North from Alpine, Wyoming on Highway 26 and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road # 281 (Indian Creek). North Indian Creek # 122, 7.9 mile long, is mostly in Wyoming and is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Big Basin Canyon #110 (non-motorized), Garden Canyon #106 (non-motorized), North Indian Pass #210 (non-motorized), and Observation Peak #168 (non-motorized). This trail will connect to South Indian Creek #045.

Note: Seasonal Trail Restrictions ** Open to Motorized Use 11/16-9/14**

South Indian Creek

This trail is located 5 miles North from Alpine, Wyoming on Highway 26 and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road # 281 (Indian Creek). South Indian Creek #045, is a 9.3 mile trail and is in Wyoming, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Driveway Canyon #061, Big Basin #046 (non-motorized), Burnt Timber #057 (non-motorized), Deadhorse Canyon #058 (non-motorized), Cabin Creek #062 (non-motorized), and Red Slide #209 (non-motorized). This trail will connect to North Indian Creek #122.

Driveway Canyon

This trail is located 5 miles South from Alpine, WY on Highway 26 and can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #281 (Indian Creek). Driveway Canyon #061, a 2.2 miles long is in Wyoming and is a motorized trail. Connecting trail is Long Springs #055 (motorized). This trail will take you to the Alpine Summer home area and stops at Forest Service Road #020 (Long Springs-Alpine 4H).

Caribou

Bear Creek

Bear Creek can be accessed from several different routes:

From Alpine, WY by taking Forest Service Road #087 (Salt River-McCoy) and then taking Forest Service Road #058 (Bear Creek-Elk Jensen) to the Bear Creek Trailhead;

From Swan Valley take Hwy 26 Southeast 8 miles to the Palisades Dam, take a right on Forest Service Road #076 (Snake River-Calamity) to Forest Service Road #058 (Snake River-Calamity) to the Bear Creek Trailhead.

Bear Creek #047, 4 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Muddy Creek #044 (motorized), Bear Creek Sheep #029 (non-motorized), Currant Creek #043 (motorized), North Fork Bear Creek #049 (motorized).

North Fork Bear Creek

This trail is located off of Bear Creek trail.

From Alpine, WY by taking Forest Service Road #087 (Salt River-McCoy) and then taking Forest Service Road #058 (Bear Creek-Elk Jensen) to the Bear Creek Trailhead;

From Swan Valley take Hwy 26 Southeast 8 miles to the Palisades Dam, take a right on Forest Service Road #076 (Snake River-Calamity) to Forest Service Road #058 (Snake River-Calamity) to the Bear Creek Trailhead.

North Fork Bear Creek #049, 5.8 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are South Fork Fall Creek #030 (motorized), Golden Gate #144 (motorized) and Bear Creek Sheep #029 (motorized).

South Fork Bear Creek

This trail is located off of Bear Creek trail.

From Alpine, WY by taking Forest Service Road #087 (Salt River-McCoy) and then taking Forest Service Road #058 (Bear Creek-Elk Jensen) to the Bear Creek Trailhead;

From Swan Valley take Hwy 26 Southeast 8 miles to the Palisades Dam, take a right on Forest Service Road #076 (Snake River-Calamity) to Forest Service Road #058 (Snake River-Calamity) to the Bear Creek Trailhead.

South Fork Bear Creek #048, 7.6 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Bear Creek Sheep #029 (motorized), White Springs #040 (motorized), Warm Springs #148 (motorized), Deadman Creek #042 (motorized) and the trail ends at Little Elk Mountain #041 (motorized).

Red Ridge

This trail is located approximately 8 miles from Swan Valley, ID, take Hwy 26 Southeast to the Palisades Dam, take a right on Forest Service Road #076 (Snake River-Calamity) to the Calamity trailhead. Red Ridge #035, 10.3 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails (all motorized) are Tag Alder #024, Russell Creek #037, and 4th of July / Red Ridge #034. This trail ends at Forest Service road #059 (Long Gulch).

Echo / Indian Creek

This trail is located approximately 6 miles Northwest of Swan Valley, ID, off of Forest Service Road #077 (Fall Creek/Skyline). Echo/Indian Creek #142, 6.2 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Deadhorse Ridge #038 (motorized), and Indian Creek #039 (motorized). This trail ends at Indian Creek trail.

South Fork Fall Creek

This trail is located approximately 10 miles Northwest of Swan Valley ID. This trail can be accessed by taking Forest Service Road #077 (Fall Creek/Skyline) to Forest Service Road #085 (South Fork Fall Creek) to the trailhead. South Fork Fall Creek #030, 6.1 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are South Fork/Rash Canyon #032 (motorized),4th of July/Red Ridge #034 (motorized) and Deadhorse Ridge #038 (motorized).

4th of July / Red Ridge

This trail is located approximately 8 miles Northwest from Swan Valley, ID. This trail can be accessed by two trails, South Fork Fall Creek #030 and Red Ridge #035. 4th of July/ Red Ridge #034, 5.9 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Indian Creek #039(motorized), Deadhorse Ridge #038 (motorized), South Fork Fall Creek #030 (motorized), North Fork Bear Creek #049 (motorized) and 4th of July Ridge #033 (motorized).

Flat Iron

This trail is located approximately 4 miles Nothwest from Swan Valley, ID. To access the trail you have to take Forest Service Road # 076 (Snake River-Calamity) to Forest Service Road #161 (Indian Creek) to the trailhead. Flat Iron #141, 2.1 miles long, is a motorized trail. Connecting trails are Indian Creek #039 (motorized) and Flat Iron Pond #013 (motorized).

Flat Iron Trail

 

Long Gulch / Indian

This trail is located approximately 4 miles Nothwest from Swan Valley, ID. To access the trail you have to take Forest Service Road # 076 (Snake River-Calamity) to Forest Service Road #161 (Indian Creek) and access the trail by taking either Flat Iron #141 or Indian Creek #039. Long Gulch/Indian #059, 1.7 miles long, is a motorized trail. This trail ends at Forest Service Road Long Gulch #059.

This trail was reconstructed in 2003 to provide for heavy ATV use that was occurring on it. Also, in 2003 two ATV cattle guards were installed.
