Bridger Wilderness Regulations

The following regulations are enforced to protect the Bridger Wilderness for you and future generations:

Group Size

To reduce impacts to trails, campsites, grazing areas and other visitors:
  • Group size is limited to 15 people and 25 pack/saddle stock

Trails

To protect trail tread and minimize soil erosion:

  • Shortcutting switchbacks is not allowed

Campsites

To reduce impacts to soils, vegetation, wildlife and other visitors and prevent water pollution:

  • Campsites must be located at least 200 feet away from a lake shore or forest service system trail and 100 feet away from streams, creeks or springs
  • The maximum length of stay by any individual or group is 16 days at one site. Visitors who vacate a campsite after 16 days may not return to the same site for at least 5 days.
  • Temporary camp structures such as hitching racks, tent frames or temporary tables will not be nailed or permanently attached to any trees and must be dismantled after the use period.

Refuse

To keep the Wilderness clean and refuse free:

  • All non burnable garbage will be packed out and no garbage will be buried.

Campfires

To preserve scarce alpine vegetation and preserve standing live and dead trees:
  • Campfires are permitted only below timberline
  • Cutting or removing standing wood (either dead or alive) is not allowed

Livestock Use

To reduce impacts from livestock use in the Wilderness and prevent the spread of noxious weeds:

  • Pack and saddle stock will be tied so as not to cause damage to any tree, vegetation or soil
  • Bulk hay or straw is not permitted.

Motorized/mechanized equipment

Primitive tools and means of travel are basic to the Wilderness experience.

Possessing or using a motor vehicle, motorboat or motorized equipment is prohibited

  • Possessing or using a hang-glider, bicycle, wagon or cart (including game carts) is prohibited
  • Landing an aircraft or dropping or picking up of any materials by means of aircraft, including a helicopter is prohibited.

Wildlife

The use of salt for attracting wildlife is prohibited.
