Description:
Las Trampas Trail starts at the far end of Mora Campground,
following the Rio Mora to the junction with Bear Creek. There
are numerous stream crossings which may be knee to hip deep
or higher during run-off or after heavy rains. Cattle and
fishermen have made trails on both sides of the river. Before
the junction with Bear Creek, there is one obvious trail on
the south bank of the river that goes through a gate and crosses
Bear Creek. A very steep rocky trail climbs out of the canyon
between Bear Creek and the Rio Mora. After climbing the brushy
slope, the trail continues uphill through a forested area.
The wilderness boundary is marked on this section of trail.
Old trail junctions can be seen on the north side of the trail.
The junction with Trail 241 is found in a large open meadow,
the Valle Medio. After the junction, the trail continues northeast
paralleling Bear Creek and then turns more sharply north climbing
a short slope to the junction with Valle
Largo Trail 248. The point in a grassy area, at which
the trail turns north is easy to miss. From this junction
the trail continues through dense forest, crosses another
large meadow, and descends to the Rio Mora. The last section
of trail, which goes up the Rio Mora to the junction with
Rociada Trail 250, can be obscure. |
Notes:
This
trail is in the Pecos Wilderness with the exception of the
portion from Mora Campground to the first ridge top. Motorized
equipment and mechanized transportation, including mountain
bikes, hunter carts, and chainsaws are prohibited.
This
trail does not recieve annual maintenance.
