Trail 218

Pack and SaddleHiking

Length: 5 Miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Use: Light
Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
Highest and Lowest Points: 11,400 feet and 9,600 feet
Trail Access: Elk Mountain
USGS Maps: Elk Mountain, Rociada
Description:

The road to Elk Mountain passes over the divide and starts to descend to the east. After slightly more than a mile, the trail starts by turning east, diverging from the road, and goes by some old mining cabins on private land. The very wide trail continues to the east for about a quarter mile reaching the junction with Gallinas Trail 216. After the signed junction, Trail 218 follows a ridge for several miles before dropping down to Harvey Ranch. The fire lines that were constructed in this area during the Viveash Fire in 2000 may cause some confusion as to where the trail is. At the eastern end of this trail segment, Blue Bell Trail 212, Trail 215, and Trail 218 all enter private property.

Notes:

The section of this trail from Harvey Ranch to the east is on private land. Permission from the landowner must be obtained before entering private land.

The only public access to this trail is from the western end and it is necessary to return the same way.
