Trail 216 Gallinas Trail

Length: 8.5 Miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Use: Light
Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
Highest and Lowest Points: 11,661 feet and 8,400 feet
Trail Access: Gallinas Canyon and Elk Mountain
USGS Maps: Elk Mountain, Honey Boy Ranch
Description:
This trail ascends 3,300 feet and passes in and out of two
canyons. From the trailhead at Evergreen Valley, follow the
Gallinas River upstream to the west. There are 17 crossings
in the first four miles with the trail becoming increasingly
steep before it turns north and climbs up and over the ridge
to Burro Canyon. Do not cut the switchbacks when climbing
up to the ridge. After crossing Burro Creek, the trail heads
up the valley alongside the stream for a short distance before
making a very steep climb out of the canyon. If coming from
the other direction, be sure to look for the trail turnoff
across the stream in Burro Canyon just before a promonent
campsite. An old blazed route can be seen going down Burro
Canyon. If the trail becomes difficult to follow through marshy
meadows you may have missed the turnoff for the trail.
Continuing up the trail toward Elk Mountain the trail intersects
Trail 218 from Harvey Ranch,
levels out, and continues up the ridge to two old mining cabins
on private land. From the cabins the trail intersects with
an old jeep road. To proceed to Elk Mountain, continue up
this road to the west. Within another mile is an iron gate
and the junction with Skyline
Trail 251. You can follow the trail to the top of Elk
Mountain or take the road that turns to the south slightly
west of the trail junction. |
Notes:
There
are two springs along the trail near the cabins mentioned
above. The Wesner Spring is slightly above the cabin to the
south.
Portions
of the trail area were burned in the Viveash Fire of 2000.
