Notes:
Use
is very light. Most of the trail use is by scouts or Nambe
Pueblo residents accessing the Pecos Wilderness.
The
trail follows the ridge top north of Ranch Viejo, and at this
time is not well-established and is hard to follow in some
places.
There
are outstanding views to the east of Santa Fe Baldy, Redondo,
Lake and Penitente Peaks and to the west the Jemez Mountains
and Espanola Valley. The vegetation is Ponderosa Pine, white
fir and limber pine at higher elevations and pinyon and juniper
in the lower elevations.
Watch
for numerous cactus species. There are many nice camp sites
along the ridge, but you must carry all your water.
The
trail is 5 miles long from Rancho Viejo to the forest boundary
with another half mile to the road at Camp Frank Rand. There
are some steep climbs, but generally it is not a difficult
trail.
