Trail 32 Penas Negras Trail

Elevation: 9,300 feet+
Trail Access: Travel north from Cuba Ranger Station on State Highway 550 for one mile to the junction of State Highways 55,44 and 126. Turn right at the junction and travel eastward on State Highway 126 for a distance of 15.4 miles to the Penas Negras Rd. 103. On this 15.4 mile road stretch, Senorito Divide, Clear Creek and Rio de las Vacas will be by passed in that order. From State Highway 126, turn left onto Forest Road 103 and travel eastward for a distance of one mile to Forest Road 69. Take this road north for about 8 miles to Forest Road 70, make a right and go east for about 1 ½ miles to the Penas Negras Trailhead.

Description:

The trail is gradual throughout and is the longest trail on the Cuba District. The destination is the San Pedro Parks which is about nine miles from the trailhead. Water is scarce throughout the length of the trail. Vegetation is mixed conifer, aspen, shrubs and grasses. The San Pedro Parks is a large meadow surrounded by dense stands of spruce.

 

Notes:

No motor vehicles or motorized equipment in the wilderness area.
