DOME WILDERNESS TRAILS RE-OPEN
(JEMEZ SPRINGS, NM)—“All road and trail closures within the Dome Wilderness Area, that were implemented for public safety due to the San Miguel Wildland Fire were re-opened today,” announced Jemez District Ranger Linda Riddle.
“We are still encouraging wilderness visitors to use caution when hiking near the burned area. Visitors should remain on maintained trails only when hiking in the Dome Wilderness for safety reasons, as hazards may still exist in burned areas,” added Riddle. Possible hazards may include hidden stump holes filled with ash, standing dead trees, rock falls through vegetation that has burned, and unstable slopes due to roots burning. Visitors may also still see smoke, as logs and stumps may still be smoldering inside the fire perimeter.
Roads and trails on the Jemez Ranger District that had been closed due to the San Miguel Fire include Forest Road 142 ; Capulin Trail #116; St. Peter’s Dome Trail #118; Turkey Springs Trail #119; and Boundary Peak Trail #427
The Jemez Ranger District encourages wilderness visitors to report any unsafe trail conditions they may encounter to the district office either in person or by calling (575) 829-3535. District Ranger Linda Riddle would also like to remind backcountry visitors to plan ahead and be prepared when venturing into any wilderness area.
