The Rio Grande cutthroat trout is listed as a sensitive species by the USFS Southwestern Region. It is the State Fish of New Mexico and is the only cutthroat trout native to the state. Yet, over the years, the habitat has shrunk and the population has declined.
In order to better educate the visiting public about our State Fish, the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout Life Cycle Game was developed three years ago under the Respect the Rio program. The game is well-traveled visiting classrooms, Earth Day events, Kids’ Fishing Day celebrations, and has become a favorite activity at children’s water festivals throughout the state. In the past year, over 1,000 children and adults played the game. Many teachers and children enjoyed the game so much they wanted one for their classrooms.
As part of a 2006 Centennial of Service Challenge Project, we made the game teacher-friendly by adding background information, supporting activities, and correlation to New Mexico Standards. The game board was translated into Spanish for teachers, who have students who speak English as a second language.
