Fall Colors on the Santa Fe National Forest

Fall PhotoAutumn colors blanket the Santa Fe National Forest with a display of reds, orange, crimson and gold from mid-September through mid-October. Go for the Gold, enjoy leisurely drives to the mountains and immerse yourself in the beauty of autumn!

Forest Service Fall Color Hotline: The toll-free 'Fall Color Hotline' can be reached by calling (800) 354-4595. The automated voice system is updated weekly with information about peak fall foliage colors in various regions throughout the country. This is the 16th year we are providing this service. The hotline will continue to operate through the middle of November, or as long as there is significant fall color in our national forests.

Weekly Report by District for: September 24 - October 1st.

Coyote Ranger District

        • Colors are starting to change slowly but mostly in the lower elevations.
        • FS Road 151 in the Rio Chama area 25% of the cottonwoods and willows have changed and the sage is very yellow at this time.
        • FS Road 76 the Rio Gallina area west of the town of Gallina and south of St Hwy. 96 approximately 40% is changed.
        • FS Road 171 in the Cecilia area south of St. Hwy. 96 35% has changed.

Cuba Ranger District

        • Leaves are just starting to turn in Cuba in the higher elevations. Why do leaves change color? Graphic Graphic: Why do leaves change colors?

Jemez Ranger District

        • No report for this week.

 

 

Espanola Ranger District

  • For your viewing plessure, travel north of Santa Fe on the Ski Basin Road, NM 475. The road is surrounded by aspen groves. Pull-outs are positioned for photo opportunities. The road continues for 18 miles until it ends at the Ski Basin.

Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District

  • In Pecos, the aspen in Jack's Creek are in the early stages of change. In Las Vegas, traveling northwest on NM 65 along Gallinas Canyon to see the cottonwoods begin to changee.
