The Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide an exquisite
backdrop to the Española Ranger District. These picturesque
mountains are considered one of the many jewels of Northern New
Mexico. However, the Española Ranger District is full of
extensive natural beauty.
From the aspens at Big Tesuque to the rugged summit of Lake Peak
and Santa Fe Baldy, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the
great outdoors. The Truchas Peaks that lie along the boundary between
the Española and Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger Districts are a popular
spot for hiking. Boasting the second highest peak in New Mexico,
the summit is over 13,000 feet with an excellent view.
If your hiking in the Pecos Wilderness please review our trail condition update and map. The map shows recent trail closures and the major trails that receive more frequent clearing. The forested areas within the Pecos Wilderness experience numerous tree falls from the severe winters and periodic high winds. This makes many of the Wilderness trails more challenging to negotiate and find. Some areas have had fires or such severe blow down events that the trails remain closed. Each year, through the efforts of volunteers and contractors, as many trails as possible get cleared for recreation. The progress of the trail cleaning will be updated periodically on these maps. The map can be used as an aid to trip planning, but provides no guarantees as to trail conditions. Remember that this is Wilderness and be prepared accordingly. Fall Greetings from the Wilderness Ranger...2010
The Española Ranger District extend from the foothills of
Santa Fe
to the Pecos Wilderness and borders the town of Española
and Los Alamos.
The Pueblos of Tesuque, Pojoaque, Nambe, Santa Clara and San Juan
as well many rural Hispanic villages neighbor the Forest. The distinct
location of the Española Ranger District makes it a quick
trip to and from civilization. We think you will agree.
Enjoy your visit!
