FIRE DANGER
The fire danger on the Santa Fe National Forest is currently EXTREME. During times of extreme fire danger, fires start quickly, spread furiously and burn intensely. All fires are potentially serious.
FIRE RESTRICTIONS
The Stage I Fire Restrictions on the Jemez and Cuba Ranger Districts were lifted on August 19. Click here to view the news release (PDF, 137kb) and the order lifting the restrictions (PDF, 207kb).
The Santa Fe National Forest has gone from Stage III Fire Restrictions to no Fire
Restrictions for most of the forest effective Saturday July 30. [News
Release (PDF, 143kb)]
The following areas are still under fire restrictions:
The Las Conchas Fire and Pacheco Fire burn areas remain under Stage III Fire Restrictions. The Las Conchas fire has created significant safety hazards for anyone entering the burned area, including threats from flash flooding, falling trees and rolling rocks. We are placing a high priority on assessing hazards that would potentially affect the public using Forest System Roads that access private land within the burned area. Paliza Campground on the Jemez Ranger District will remain closed while it continues to be used as a spike camp for firefighters from the Las Conchas Fire. The Holy Ghost Campground on the Pecos/Las Vegas District is closed for facility reconstruction.

WEATHER
Current weather conditions from the National Weather Service are updated continually.
Weather information is derived from National Weather Service data. Please see our weather disclaimer.
PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT
You brought it in heavy, why not take it out light? Be mindful of your consumption and pack out all trash when you leave the forest. Remember not to burn your trash. If you’re not camping in a developed camp or picnic ground, remember the Leave No Trace principles. Visit: http://www.lnt.org/ for Leave No Trace information.
BE BEAR AWARE
Drought conditions have limited food sources for wildlife; therefore we are expecting a high occurrence of bear sightings this year. Although bears are beautiful to look at, they are wild creatures and can be dangerous if provoked and attracted. « more Be Bear Aware information »
ONGOING FIRES AND CLOSURES
Emergency closures within and around 2010 fire areas remain in effect until lifted. Fire areas include: Rio Wildfire, Jemez Ranger District; Tecolote Wildfire, Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District:
- Guacamalla Fire, Jemez Ranger District - Update: September 12, 2011:
Today residents from north of Albuquerque to Jemez Springs are expected to see minimal smoke from the Guacamalla Fire approximately 5 miles east of Ponderosa, NM. The fire received much in direct rainfall over the weekend and as a result, is not creating as much smoke as in previous days. Because of the increased moisture level, the fire continues to burn slowly with low spread potential. The east side of the Guacamalla fire abuts the west side of the Las Conchas Fire burn area, and is not likely to spread into the burn area. Presently, the fire has burned 623 acres and is holding north of Forest Road 266 and south of Forest Road 271. Wildland firefighters are continuing to monitor the fire. « more information on the Guacamalla Fire »
