[PHOTO: Alto Pit OHV Campground and Day-Use Area]Alto Pit Off-Highway Vehicle Recreations Site, Campground and Picnic is located about 7 miles northwest of Prescott on the Bradshaw Ranger District. ATV and dirt bike riders enjoy 400 acres with approximately 20 miles of motorized trails, 2 cross-country areas, as well as a designated children's area. UTVs and four-wheel drive vehicles are not allowed since the vehicle spans greater than 50 inches. The main pit is a former gravel pit at 6,200 foot elevation just below Granite Mountain. There is also a smaller gravel pit. Higher terrain trails rise to 6,400 foot elevation. Rock and granite surface the area with ponderosa pine around. A host is available to provide information and assist visitors.

  • 10 Camping Units with Tables and Grills/Fire Rings (maximum occupancy is 10 people and 2 vehicles-2nd vehicle is an extra charge)
  • 1 Double Camping Unit (Site #3) with Tables and Grills (maximum occupancy is 20 people and 4 vehicles-3rd and 4th vehicles is an extra charge for each vehicle)
  • Picnic Area has 2 Picnic Tables, Vault Toilet, Ramada, Unloading Area, and Information Sign
  • 2 Vault Toilets
  • Gravel Campground Roads
  • Staging area with ramps
  • Trash Collection
  • No Drinking Water, Electricity, Dump Station, or Shower Facilities

Stay limit: 14 Days

Fees:

  • Campground:$14 per night at single camp sites, $28 per night at double camp site, and $5 per extra vehicles
    (Expanded Amenity Fee - 50% discount for Interagency Senior or Access Pass holders)
  • OHV and Picnic Day-use: $5 per site
    (Standard Amenity Fee - Can pay at site or use a Valid Pass)

Reservations: All of the sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations are required.

Access: From downtown Prescott, take Gurley Street west to Montezuma Street. Take Montezuma (Whiskey Row) north until it turns into Iron Springs Road. Follow Iron Springs approximately 5 miles to Alto Pit.

Special attractions:

General Information:

  • Camping is permitted only in designated camp sites.
  • At least one person must occupy a campsite during the first night after camping equipment is set up.
  • Camping equipment may not be left unattended for more than 24 hours.
  • Each camp site usually accommodates one vehicle towing a camp trailer plus one additional vehicle (there is a charge for additional vehicle). Vehicles must be parked in space provided on site - not along side the road. Depending on the site, trailers between 22 feet to 40 feet in length can be accommodated.
  • Camp sites are designed for 5 people; a maximum of 10 is allowed only to accommodate a single large family.
  • Quiet hours must be observed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Fires must be confined within fireplaces, grills or fire rings provided.
  • The gathering of dead wood is allowed for camping use only.

  • Trails and cross-country areas are for vehicles 50" wide or less
  • No full size 4 x 4 or Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV) over 50" wide
  • Riders travel on campground road only to access trails (no laps)
  • Speed limit is 15 mph
  • All vehicles must have USFS approved spark arrestor in working condition
  • All vehicles must meet Federal and State noise standards - AZ max. 96 dba
  • Outside of the cross-country areas, riders must stay on designated trails
  • Dawn to dusk riding only
