Community Meetings for a Landscape Vision

Sponsored by a variety of citizen groups

In gathering information to address potential Need for Change in the existing Forest Plan, the Prescott National Forest has invited those communities who are interested, to develop and share a landscape vision statement for their community for the next 20 to 50 years. This vision should include social, economic, and ecological factors and what part the Prescott National Forest plays in that vision. People with a wide range of interests are encouraged to participate in the discussions. The visions, issues and other information gathered will be used to inform the direction of the 1.3 million acre Prescott Forest Management Plan over the next 20 years.

[GRAPHIC: Community Resource Unit Map]A contractor (Confab) described communities within and surrounding the Prescott National Forest geographically as well as socially. Confab produced a Human Geographic Map (1,054 KB PDF) and a report providing descriptions of issues, network gathering places, and network people. Each meeting will focus primarily on that Community Resource Unit.

Key points regarding these meetings and visions:

  • Upon request, the Prescott National Forest would provide a facilitator
  • Community visions most helpful if received by December 10, 2007 but always welcome
  • Prescott National Forest will publish community visions in the draft and final planning documents
  • Prescott National Forest not promising to meet every vision but will work toward
  • Various laws and policies require Prescott National Forest to make balanced decisions
  • Interests of national constituencies, laws and regulations will be a part of the Plan
  • Forest Plan approval rests with Forest Supervisor; cannot legally give away authority

Traditional methods of formal public participation in Forest Plan revision will be used in addition to these informal community meetings. The Prescott National Forest will hold formal public meetings on the Forest Plan anticipated to be in February or March of 2008.

Cross Community

On April 15, 2008, members from the various communities above who have developed vision statements met at Arcosanti. The group discussed their own visions and the common elements found in all of the visions. These common elements included ranching/land use, water, open space/viewshed, forest/grassland/watershed health, social/economic benefits, rural character, community engagement/interagency coordination & education/volunteers, transportation planning, trash/litter, law enforcement, cultural/historical uses & sites, recreation/access, and fire. An additional meeting is planned for June to discuss if the group would like to develop a broad cross-community vision in addition to their individual community vision statements.
