Preparing for Forest Plan Revision - Public Meetings

Camp Verde, AZ - February 25 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Cliff Castle Casino - 555 Middle Verde Road
Prescott, AZ - February 26 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Yavapai College -1100 E. Sheldon St - Building 19, Room 147

The Prescott National Forest has spent the past year putting together information for two reports: 1) Economic and Social Sustainability Assessment and, 2) Ecological Sustainability. Together, these reports describe the current state of the Prescott National Forest contributions to ecological systems, and the contributions of Prescott National Forest goods and services to economic and social systems in the area. The Economic and Social Sustainability Assessment is now posted on the Prescott National Forest web site. The Ecological Sustainability Report is in draft form and a final version is expected to be posted soon.

The goal of each report is to identify "concerns" that may need to be addressed in a revised Forest Plan based on comparison to stated reference conditions, on information heard from citizens, or on recent trends in conditions. In order to be identified as a potential need for change, addressing a concern must be under the Prescott National Forest authority and control, and the concern must be reversible and responsive to management actions. In addition, potential responses to these concerns in a Forest Plan Revision must be at a strategic policy level, as opposed to specific activities on the ground.

At the February public meetings (2/25 in Camp Verde; 2/26 in Prescott), we would like to discuss the findings from those two documents, and get your feedback on which items resonate as the most urgent at a policy level.

Following the February public meetings, we will incorporate your suggestions into a Comprehensive Evaluation Report, to be submitted to the Prescott National Forest Supervisor. He will further prioritize the list of needs for change and select a number of focus areas that most need to be addressed and that feasibly can be addressed during the Forest Plan Revision process. Other areas may be addressed later and may lead to future amendments in the Revised Forest Plan.

From there we will initiate the formal Plan Revision process and move into development of a Proposed Forest Plan, addressing the identified focus areas in the greatest detail. We hope that you will continue to engage with us as we work through this process. If you have questions, please contact Sally Hess-Samuelson at 928-443-8216 or shesssamuelson@fs.fed.us.
