Youth Conservation Corps!
Announcing the Prescott National Forest’s
Youth Conservation Corps
Summer Program 2010 for Youth 15-18
Work, Learn, Earn!
The Prescott National Forest is hiring forty young men and women aged 15-18 to work in the Youth Conservation Corps. The five-week program will run from June 14 though July 16, 2010. Enrollees will be paid the Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The first week will be a five-day residential program at Mingus Springs Camp. The remaining four weeks will be a commuter program, eight hours a day, Monday – Friday. Typically YCC enrollees and staff will meet each workday morning at a site in Cottonwood and Prescott and will return to that site at the end of the day. During the four week commuter part of the program, however, enrollees and staff may spend one or more nights camping at remote work sites on the forest. Staff to enrollee ratio is at least 1:5. YCC enrollees must provide boots, long pants, and a sleeping bag. Gloves, hard hats and other safety equipment will be issued. No electronic devices of any kind are allowed at any time.
As a member of YCC's summer program, enrollees will work to preserve, protect and maintain some of Yavapai County’s most treasured natural areas. They may face difficult working conditions, such as weather extremes, will be expected to hike several miles to and from some work sites, and complete full days of physical work. The day to day activities of YCC crews will be varied and may include: construction and maintenance of fences and trails, planting native flora and removing invasive plant species, working on erosion control projects, building animal habitat or restoring riparian areas. In addition to conservation work, enrollees will also learn why these projects are so important from land management specialists who work along with the YCC crews.
YCC enrollees often make life-long friendships during their summer experience. They also find great satisfaction in working together as a team and making positive contributions to their local natural environment. They gain valuable job experience and many participants go on to take courses in resource management and to work in related fields. This program is truly a unique opportunity for youth -- the participants commonly describe their time in YCC as "one of the best in my life."
