PRESCRIBED BURNINGThe Prescott National Forest is currently conducting its fall burn program. The purpose of doing controlled burning is to clean up the forest floor of pine needles, limbs and other dead vegetation. Controlled burns are an effective tool to create a buffer zone in case of a wildfire. A wildfire will not burn as intensely in an area where a prescribed burn has taken place, giving firefighters a better chance to get containment of a wildfire.
FOREST HEALTH PROJECTSThe Prescott National Forest has an ongoing forest health improvement program which consists of commercial timber harvest, thinning of small diameter trees, and prescribed burning. Reduced tree densities decrease competition for limiting resources such as water and nutrients which results in enhanced forest health. There are forest health improvement projects in several locations on the Prescott National Forest including: within the Prescott Basin on the Bradshaw Ranger District; north of Chino Valley on the Chino Valley Ranger District; and on Mingus Mountain on the Verde Ranger District.
