Recreational Activities - Vistas

Sacramento Ranger District

Tunnel Vista
Tunnel Vista is located just west of the tunnel on US 82.  Scenic views include Fresnal Canyon, the Tularosa Basin, White Sands National Monument and the San Andreas Mountains.  The vista has paved parking and an interpretative sign.  The rocky cliffs on the opposite side of the highway are popular for rock climbing and repelling.

Mexican Canyon Trestle Vista
The Mexican Canyon Trestle Vista is just northwest of Cloudcroft along US 82.  Part of the old “Cloud Climbing Railroad", the Trestle is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.  Parking is available to view the impressive structure along both sides of the highway.  Two vantage points of this beautiful relic of an age gone by are available; one from US 82 and one from following a number of trails from the nearby Trestle Picnic Area located about 1/2 mile east of the US 82 site on the edge of Cloudcroft.

Haynes Vista

Haynes Vista is located about one mile south of the junctions of State Highways 130 and 6563 along NM6563, the Sunspot Highway.  Scenic views include Haynes Canyon, the Tularosa Basin and White Sands National Monument.  Facilities include paved parking, interpretive signs and benches.

Cathey Vista

Cathey Vista is located about 12 miles south of Highway 130 on the Sunspot Highway (NM6563).  A short walk from the parking lot to the vista rewards visitors with a breathtaking view of the Tularosa Basin.  The parking lot is paved and can accommodate RVs.  Visitors can also access the Rim Trail a National Recreation Trail from the vista.

Windy Point Vista
Windy Point Vista is an observation point located on NM State Highway 532.  Follow NM 48 four miles north of Ruidoso, turn west (left) on NM 532.  Follow for 9 miles to the signed pull-off point.  The elevation of Windy Point is about 10,000 feet.  Be sure to bring a camera as the view is breathtaking.  Views of Sierra Blanca, Monjeau Lookout, Ruidoso, Alto Lake and the Capitan Mountains can be seen from the Vista.  Season of this free-use area is year round.

Guadalupe Ranger District

Rim Road
Rim Road (Forest Road 67).  Drive 12 miles north of Carlsbad on US 285, turn left on the NM 137 and proceed for approximately 48 miles to FR 67.  Turn north on FR 67, a primitive road,  ranging over two-thirds of the Guadalupe District for approximately 45 miles.  One segment of the road overlooks Little Dog-Pup, an area of rugged roadless canyons.  No gas or water is available.

South Rim Road
The South Rim Road (FR 540) can be found by driving 12 miles north of Carlsbad on US 285, turn left on to NM 137 and proceed for approximately 43 miles to FR 540.  Turn south on FR 540.  A well-maintained, dead-end gravel road along the southern part of the District with spectacular views of Dog Canyon and the Brokeoff  Mountains.  Many trails wind throughout the southern portion of the District several leading to nearby Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
