Kaibab National Forest to Implement Little Mountain Burn Williams, Ariz. —Fire managers with the Kaibab National Forest plan to implement the Little Mountain prescribed burn on the North Kaibab Ranger District late this week. Burning will begin Sept.18 and may last up to three days. The project is approximately 1,200 acres and is located north and west of Big Springs, immediately west of Forest Road 22. Fire managers will conduct a test burn prior to initiating the burn to ensure that weather conditions are appropriate. The acres identified for treatment are bordered on the east by FR 22, the west by FR 252 and the south by FR 447. The northern most boundary is made up of dozer line. Fire personnel and equipment will be traveling in these areas. Visitors are urged to use caution while recreating in the area. Smoke will typically be heaviest the day the burn is initiated. Fire managers anticipate the smoke will linger for several days after the burn is complete. Smoke will be visible from the roads, so motorists should use headlights at all times. Fire managers work closely with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality while planning and implementing projects in an effort to limit the impact prescribed burns have on the community. In our efforts to protect the community from the threat of large fires, we appreciate the community’s tolerance to smoke during the prescribed burning season.
