This coverage comprises the extent of the Southwest Region National Forests (New Mexico & Arizona), the data set is composed of polygon features denoting soil condition, erosion hazard, revegetation potential and vegetation cover. The scale is 1:250000.
This data set was created for the USFS General Terrestrial Ecosystem Survey. Its purpose is to delineate the locations and areas of varying GTES characteristics.

Polygon and chain-node topology present. Tolerances were chosen to prevent errors in labels, intersections, tics, overshoots, and undershoots. Tests were performed to detect these types of errors and necessary corrections were made.
Data completeness reflects the content of the source file.
The root-mean square error is generally .003 map units or less.
Polygon boundaries and corresponding gtes values for the national forests.
Mylars (25 total) were digitized using an earlier version of Arc/Info then edited in ArcEdit to correct for overshoots, dangles , and intersect errors (topology created). GTES attribute data previously gathered and compiled by the USFS was then added to each polygon by EDAC staff. Tic coverages were generated then GTES coverages were transformed to real world coordinates. Individual quad coverages were appended together to form the entire region of the unified national forests. Checkplots were reviewed by the USFS and subsequent edits performed by EDAC. This coverage is currently used w/ Arc/Info version 7.2.1.
