Description:
Abstract:
This feature class depicts both perennial and intermittent water bodies as polygons on the Coconino National Forest. These features are areas that cover more than 50 feet on the ground.
Purpose:
The purpose of this water body feature class is to depict and label the water bodies on these National Forests. It will be used to provide water body information for any necessary analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
This feature class was derived from the cartographic feature files (CFF's) for the Primary Base Series 7.5 minute quadrangles provided by the USDA, Forest Service, Geospatial Service and Technology Center (GSTC). The CFFs may have been augmented with data from a variety of sources (GPS, DOQQs, hardcopy maps) per direction from Forest specialists.

Comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in photo interpretation, rounding of decimal coordinates during conversion, and mapping conventions over time. Any hardcopies utilizing these data sets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way, they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. The user specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor to imply that changes made were approved by the USDA, Forest Service.

Cartographic Feature Files (CFFs) are digital files containing a vector representation of the point and line features shown on a Forest Service Primary Base Series (PBS) map. CFF data are collected by digitizing PBS maps and revised using correction guide information provided by field units. GSTC began producing Vintage 11 CFFs for the USDA, Forest Service, Southwestern Region in 1999.

Process_Description:
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PERTAINS TO THE GEODATABASE MODEL General: Vintage 11 CFF digital data (and in some cases, Forest-provided digital data) was used to create this feature class. When Forest-provided data was used, the Forest provided the CFF code(s) for arcs. Source and method was populated for all arcs. The data set was checked for dangle and label errors. Any errors were corrected and topology built for polygon and arc. Polygon attributes were then populated, as appropriate. Technical: The CFFs will be the basis for the water body data. In some instances, the Forests may have additional information (spatial and/or attribute) to supplement this layer. Water body arcs are extracted from the master quad coverage to be used in stream centerlining. Sand areas (CFF 316) and wide washes (CFF 317) are used for centerlining, but are not meant to be included in the water body feature class. They will be coded as miscellaneous and will need to be selected by their CFF codes. The water body feature class is then plotted with the streams, by quad, color-coded by CFF for review by the Forest. The Forest should annotate any edits to the waterbody data on the plot. These edits would consist primarily of changes to the CFFs or correcting gaps in the connectivity of the polygons. At this point the water body data is complete. When the polygon output coverage is produced in the final processing phase, the polygons will have an item, WATERBOD_NAME which is populated based on the set of rules in the Data Specifications document.

Process_Description:
The data were reprojected from UTM 12N NAD27 to UTM 12N NAD83 using the NADCON transformation. The data were converted from Version 1.x of the USDA, Forest Service, Southwestern Region Personal Geodatabase to Version 1.2 of the USDA, Forest Service, Southwestern Region Personal Geodatabase In the USDA, Forest Service, Southwestern Region Personal Geodatabase (v1.2), some of the Source_Code and Method attributes have been moved to the main overlaying Feature Class from the Arc Feature Class, or, have gone from Arc Level Metadata to Feature Level Metadata. This was done in order to simplify the geodatabase for editing and maintenance. In many cases, polygons or lines are from a single source and method, which is promoted to the feature level metadata. When the polygons or lines are not from a single source (or dominant source), or use different methods, the code that has the least accuracy associated with the feature has been promoted. Also, nationally in the Forest Service, attributes that were labeled Source or Source_Code have been changed to Data_Source, which has a slightly different domain. The script and data loading process to version 1.2 automates those changes.
