PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT REGARDING IMPROVEMENTS

TO MARSHALL GULCH PICNIC AREA AND TRAILHEAD ON MT. LEMMON

Multiple Opportunities to Comment

TUCSON, AZ  (May 25, 2010) – The Coronado National Forest, Santa Catalina Ranger District is seeking public input on a proposed picnic and trailhead improvement project at Marshall Gulch on Mt. Lemmon. Forest personnel will be on site Saturday, May 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to discuss options under consideration and to receive input from visitors and Mt. Lemmon residents and business owners.

“Marshall Gulch is a popular recreation area,” said Stan Helin, Santa Catalina District Ranger. “It receives heavy usage during the summer months. Often the parking lot is filled beyond capacity, resulting in congestion and constrained egress. We have before us an opportunity to make improvements, and we have some ideas we think would be effective.  We are asking the public to help us identify issues and concerns related to the proposed project.”

Marshall Gulch offers a trailhead providing access to Marshall Gulch and Aspen trails and picnic sites along Sabino Creek. Proposed changes include a second creek crossing to provide a one-way loop road for improved vehicular circulation, reconfigured parking areas, a pedestrian bridge across Sabino Creek, renovated accessible picnic sites, accessible restroom buildings, and asphalt road surfaces, possibly with concrete curbs.

Comments can be submitted in writing by U.S. mail (5700 N. Sabino Canyon Rd. Tucson, AZ 85750, attn. Marshall Gulch Picnic and Trailhead Improvement Project), facsimile (520 749-7723), or hand-delivery; electronically by email (comments-southwestern-coronado@fs.fed.us); and orally by telephone (520 749-8700) or in person at the District Office (at the address above) from 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.  Comments should be received by June 29, 2010.
