Passes, Permits & Fees
Permits
Federal law requires a permit for "special uses," which includes most commercial or group activities on National Forests.
Most permits require an application process. The time needed to review an application depends on the complexity of the permit.
Permit fees are determined by the activity, and can range from $45 to many thousands of dollars.
Permits are required for the following:
- Outfitters and Guides
- Group Recreation Events (75 or more people)
- Commercial film or photography shoots
- recreation residences
- grazing
- electronic communication sites
- research
- weddings (with 75 or more people)
- organization camps
- campground management
- ski areas
- collection of forest products
- Any other approved business activity
For questions about the permit process, read the FAQ, or contact the nearest Forest Service office.
