Wing Mountain Winter Recreation

Eight miles north of Flagstaff, at the end of a short spur road, the US Forest Service has marked over seventeen miles of cross-country ski trails for visitor use. No mechanized grooming is provided but tracks are usually skied in reasonably soon after a storm. Though the trails follow gently rolling terrain for the most part, a few of them have enough gradient to add some zest. Powder-covered hillsides adjacent to the trails provide opportunities for practicing your telemark or finding a little additional downhill excitement. Both novice and experienced skiers will find plenty to enjoy at Wing Mountain.

As soon as enough snow is on the ground for snowplay activities the Wing Mountain Snowplay Area will be open for business. The Wing Mountain Snowplay Area is located at Wing Mountain pit on Forest Road 222B, 3 miles northwest of the Snowbowl Road junction on Highway 180. Only SOFT snow-play items are allowed; no wood, metal or fiberglass sleds/snowboards are allowed. This site is operated and managed by Recreation Resource Management under a Temporary Special Use Permit with the Coconino National Forest. The cost per vehicle is $10.00 up to 5 people, (or $2.00 per person - busses & walk in/bicycle). Services include parking management for over 500 vehicles, snowplowing, portable restrooms, trash receptacles, and the sale of winter gear and concessions on busy weekends and holidays. See Recreation Resource Management Wing Mountain website. New information line for Wing Mountain: 602-923-3555.

Please be aware that the Wing Mountain Seasonal Motorized Wheeled Vehicle closure is effective December1-March 31 (Forest Order 04-00-146, 36 CFR Section 261.50 (a) and/or (b)). The roads within this area will be closed to wheeled vehicles as soon as enough snow falls for snowplay and other winter activities that the area is managed for. The roads effected by the closure include Forest Roads 222, 519, 519A and 222B beyond Wing Mountain Pit.

Hours of operation are 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily (dependent on snow availability and weather conditions).
