Sandia Ranger District La Luz Trail Report

LA LUZ TRAIL REPORT- FALL/WINTER 2009/2010

Date of report: November 16, 2009

  • La Luz trailhead to Chimney Canyon Spring (2.5 mi.). The fresh snow that fell during the storm of Nov. 14-15 is almost entirely gone from this section of the trail.
  • La Luz from Chimney Canyon to La Cueva Overlook (4.6 mi.). There are 2 inches to 4 inches of snow on most of the trail, with the possibility of icy spots developing in shady areas over the next week or so.
  • La Cueva Overlook to La Cueva Canyon (5 mi.). Mixed conditions, mostly snow covered with the possibility of ice in shady places. Conditions change rapidly. Use caution.
  • La Cueva Canyon to junction with Crest Spur trail (7 mi.). This section of the trail will remain snow-packed for the rest of the winter, with 4 to 8 inches of fresh snow packed on the trail. Due to the continuous cold in this canyon it is unlikely that significant ice will develop before Spring. Good footwear and traction devices are recommended. Warm clothing is essential.
  • Crest Spur trail and La Luz trail to Upper Tram (7.3 or 7.8 mi.). Hikers should be prepared for significant icy spots on these trails. Conditions change daily and by the hour!
