WILDERNESS AREAS
Wheeler Peak Wilderness
In March of 1957, the legislature of the State of new Mexico
passed a joint memorial to the Congress of the United States requesting
an area surrounding Wheeler Peak be established as wilderness.
Seven years later, on September 3, 1964, Congress responded and
Wheeler Peak officially became a designated Wilderness.

Pecos Wilderness
The northern portion of the Pecos Wilderness
contains some of the most picturesque and beautiful natural scenery
in the region. It is noted for rugged alpine peaks, steep canyons,
cold cirque lakes, large open meadows, and numerous streams. This
region is also one of the more primitive and remote areas of the
wilderness.
