San Leonardo Lakes Trail 30

Hiking Trail IconHorseback Riding Trail Icon Cross Country Ski Trail Icon snowshoeing icon Wilderness Area Icon

Location: Camino Real Ranger District - Pecos Wilderness Area

Trail Beginning: 9,360 feet

Trail Ending: 11,660 feet

In the summer months the trail is used for hiking and horseback riding. In the Winter the trails are used for cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. This trail is closed to vehicles at the trailhead, signed with boards and enters wilderness.

Access:
The 2.8 mile trailhead is off of Forest Road 639. However, that road is currently in poor shape (2-3 segments or entrenchment) & unpassable by 2 wheel drive passenger vehicles. The trail is rocky and climbs quickly up the canyon through dense conifer forests to San Leonardo Lakes (11,400 feet). Sheer cliffs rise up from the south, creating a beautiful settings and a delightful climax for the trip up the canyon.

Attractions and Considerations:
It is possible to climb the high ridge to the east and drop down to the Trampas Lakes. This is a very steep and difficult climb of about 1,000 foot elevation change in less than a mile, but if you make the ascent you will be treated to a great view in all directions.
