Hiking - Lake Fork Tail 82

Location: Questa Ranger District
Trail Beginning: 9,200 feet
Trail Ending: 11,520 feet
Access:
From Questa, travel east .2 miles on Highway 38 to Cabresto Road (State
Highway 563). Drive 6 miles to Forest Service Road 134A and then go 2
miles up this primitive road to Cabresto Lake. Trail 82 begins at the
lake.
Attractions and Considerations:
The trail skirts the western shoreline of Cabresto Lake before
following Lake Fork Creek for the remainder of the 5 miles in the Latir
Peak Wilderness. A mid-way point is the junction of Lake Fork (Trail 82)
and Bull Creek (Trail 85). Cross the bridge and continue north along Lake
Fork Creek as it passes through mixed conifers, aspen groves and small
meadows to the next trail junction (Heart Lake and Baldy Mountain). Take
the path to the right and continue north. If you take the trail to the
left you will be on the Heart Lake Trail 115. Heart Lake is a short distance
from the junction. Camping is permitted 300 feet away from the lake's
edge. It is worthwhile to hike up the mile of switchbacks west of Heart
lake to reach a series of beautiful alpine mesas and the Latir Peaks.
Water is available for most of the trail but should be properly treated
before consumption. For short trips, take a supply of water from home
or other domestic source.
Day hiking, backpacking, pack and saddle as well as back country camping
is permitted along the entire length of the trail. If you Pack-It-In,
...please ... Pack-It-Out. Motorized vehicle use is not allowed.
