RED FLAG ALERT
A Red Flag Alert is issued when severe fire weather, such
as low humidity accompanied by strong winds and numerous
dry ligtning storms, is predicted by the National Weather
Service. During these periods, which are usually only one
to three days in duration, various fire prevention measures
may be implemented. Campfires may be allowed in designated
developed campgrounds and picnic areas but prohibited in
others, as well as throughout the rest of the forest. Powersaws
may not be used during a Red Flag Alert.

PRESCRIBED FIRE
PRESCRIBED FIRES AND SMOKE
Many parts of our forest are susceptible
to insect infestations, disease, and catastrophic wildfire.
It is because of our love of our forest, and our desire
to improve its health that we prescribe fire. Much like
a doctor prescribes medication to a sick patient, Forest
Service managers sometimes prescribe fire to improve the
health of our local forests...

Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy
The tools and technologies of fire management have come
a long way since the Forest Service was first charged with
protection of the land in the early 1900s.
Lightning strikes a tree in a remote area of the forest. The fire grows to more than 1,000 acres and you say the forest officials are doing what?! Monitoring the fire and watching it burn. What’s happening here?
There are two types of wildland fires, unplanned wildfires and planned prescribed fires. During a naturally caused unplanned wildfire, fire managers have a wide variety of tools to use to manage the wildfire. Decisions on the appropriate response can range from full suppression to monitor for natural resource benefit. Wildfires may be managed with multiple objectives and multiple strategies depending on the complexity, associated risks, current and forecasted weather conditions.
When unplanned human caused wildfires occur, the only acceptable objective is full suppression.

FIRE
TRAINING
A wide range of courses are available year-round for professional
wildland fire professionals to update their knowledge and
skills. Many of these courses are interagency in nature,
others are specific to the needs of the Forest Service.
WILDFIRE PREVENTION
As interest in wildland fire and how it affects our lives
and the ecosystems around us grows, so have the resources
available to pass this information on to the public.
- Campfire Safety
- Fire Prevention
Communication Plan , FY 2010 (PDF, 79 kb)
- Just for Kids
Our fire prevention education program focuses on children in all the school systems surrounding the forest. Our emphasis is teaching the importance of wildfire prevention, the principles of fire behavior, healthy forests and the concept of interdependence in forest ecosystems. We partner with Smokey Bear to teach small children Smokey Bear’s five rules on preventing wildfire.
