Access

Travel 13 miles west of Eagle on I-70 to the Dotsero exit. Follow signs for Sweetwater/Burns, turning north onto the Colorado River Road. Go 1.8 miles, turning left onto the Coffee Pot Road, FDR 600. Stay on this road for 26.9 miles, turning left at the sign for the campground.

Facilities

White Owl Campground has eleven sites. Three sites are to the right of the vault toilet in the open meadow. These sites are designated with picnic tables and fire rings. They are good for vehicles and trailers under 30 feet long. The other eight sites are partially shaded and accessible by a road to the left of the toilet. All of these have picnic tables as well as fire rings. The vault toilet has an accessible ramp from the small day use parking lot for those Forest visitors with disabilities. Please pack your trash out.

Attractions & Considerations

Natural Features :

White Owl Campground is located on 21 acre White Owl Lake at 10,680 feet in elevation. The surrounding landscape is small hills and typical subalpine meadows with sparse stands of spruce/fir forest.

Attractions:

FISHING - Deep Lake and Heart Lake, a short distance farther up the Coffee Pot Road provide good fishing opportunities. White Owl Lake has no fish due to winter kill.

4-WHEEL DRIVE ROADS - There are a number of 4-wheel drive roads for use by jeeps, ATV's and motorcycles around the Heart Lake and Deep Lake area. FDR 618, 632, 641, 642, 643, 644 and 645 are all popular, but please stay on the roads. The subalpine meadows are fragile and do not recover quickly from off-road use.

FISHING - Sweetwater Lake offers good fishing from the shore or small boats for brook, brown, and rainbow trout, as well as kokanee salmon.

BOATING - Canoes and rowboats are popular on this lake, but some electric motors are used. No gasoline powered motors are allowed on Sweetwater Lake.
