Location
Sig Creek Campground is 39 miles north of Durango, then 6 miles
west of Durango Mountain Resort on the Hermosa Park Rd. (Forest
Rd. 578), accessible by 2WD.
Much of this gravel road follows the route of the Scotch Creek
Toll Road, which ran from Rico to the Animas Valley in the late
1800s. The road continues over Bolam Pass down to Colorado Highway
145 north of Rico. The upper section is 4WD only.
Facilities
This campground has 9 campsites on a south-facing hillside about
1/4 mile from the East Fork of Hermosa Creek. Most sites have limited
shade and are warm in summer.
There is no campground host. Payment is with a fee tube. Trash
pickup, vault toilets.
Attractions & Considerations
The Hermosa Creek Trail begins 2 miles past the campground, near
the confluence of the main and east forks of Hermosa Creek. This
popular, mostly single-track mountain-biking and hiking trail heads
south to Hermosa through a roadless area. About 18 miles long and
mostly downhill, it parallels the creek, with great side hikes and
loop trips. A few camping sites are available at the trailhead [see
Lower Hermosa Campground], which
has a toilet, picnic tables, fire grates, corral, and parking area.
Fishing in the East Fork of Hermosa Creek from the campground up
to the headwaters is catch-and-release only. Downstream of the campground
toward Hermosa Creek Trailhead, fishing falls under standard Colorado
fishing regulations.
