Population growth and increased urban development adjacent to National Forest Wildernesses in Colorado has significantly increased over the past decade.  In some wildernesses, recreation use exceeds Forest Plan standards and guidelines for visitation resulting in resource damage.  In order to address this complex problem and to plan a strategy to protect wilderness character into the future, the Regional Office is hosting several recreation forums and wilderness field trips.

These events will bring Forest Service line officers, wilderness managers, partners and user groups together for a closer examination of the issues related to high use.  Also, it will provide a forum for discussing how to manage these popular wilderness destinations in the future.

The Core Team is composed of 11 members of the public that have volunteered their time to attend the Recreation Forums and Wilderness Field Trips. The Core Team will prepare a Summary Report to present to the Regional Forester and Colorado Forest Supervisors with recommendations on how to manage recreation use in Colorado's popular wilderness areas in the future. The Summary Report and recommendations will be presented on December 18, 2006 the the Regional Office Auditorium from 10:00 am to Noon. This presentation is open to the public.
