Essential Items

Be sure to take these essential items along:

  • A cell phone, if possible.
  • Sturdy boots, warm jacket, hat and extra clothing
  • Canteen, water, water purification tablets and extra food
  • Whistle - Three blasts is a distress signal. Please use whistle only in an emergency
  • Sunglasses and sunburn protection
  • Pocket knife
  • Waterproof matches and fire source (such as a candle)
  • Insect repellent
  • First aid and snake bite kit
  • Flashlight
  • Map and compass
  • Trowel for sanitation and fire
  • Pocket mirror (to use as a signaling device)
  • Prescription glasses (an extra pair)
  • Prescription medications for ongoing medical conditions
  • Radio with batteries
  • Space blanket or a piece of plastic (to use for warmth or shelter)
  • Trash bag (makes an adequate poncho)
