Essential Items
Be sure to take these essential items along:
- A cell phone, if possible.
- Sturdy boots, warm jacket, hat and extra clothing
- Canteen, water, water purification tablets and extra food
- Whistle - Three blasts is a distress signal. Please use whistle only in an emergency
- Sunglasses and sunburn protection
- Pocket knife
- Waterproof matches and fire source (such as a candle)
- Insect repellent
- First aid and snake bite kit
- Flashlight
- Map and compass
- Trowel for sanitation and fire
- Pocket mirror (to use as a signaling device)
- Prescription glasses (an extra pair)
- Prescription medications for ongoing medical conditions
- Radio with batteries
- Space blanket or a piece of plastic (to use for warmth or shelter)
- Trash bag (makes an adequate poncho)
