Access
From Buena Vista, travel south on Highway 285 for 7 miles to County
Road 162. Turn west at Nathrop on CR 162 and travel west for 12.5
miles to the Baldwin Gulch/Mount Antero trailhead. Parking for this
trailhead is located along CR 162 just west of Alpine. The route
up Mount Antero begins here at County Road 277. This road is a narrow,
four-wheel drive road and drivers should be experience with four-wheel
and extreme mountain driving. County Road 277 turns left (south)
and travels for 2.5 miles to a fork in the road. Cross the creek
and follow the road to its end. The road has numerous switchbacks
and during summers months, vehicle traffic can be heavy. The trail
takes off from the end of the road and travels up the ridge to the
peak.
Features
The peak was named for Chief Antero of the Uintah band of Ute Indians.
Mount Antero boasts the highest gem fields in North America and
gem hunting is a popular activity for visitors. Many unpatented
mining claims are scattered over the peak. Some of the claims are
active and hikers should use caution when walking through some area.
Excavation holes may be difficult to see. Do not remove specimens
from active claims!
Considerations
Climbing 14,000 peaks has become a popular activity and the increase
in foot traffic has caused considerable damage to delicate soils
and vegetation. Alpine plants are extremely delicate and even the
slightest human disturbance can cause long-term damage. The effects
of this damage can last for years. Do not cut switchbacks
or travel off of the trail.
