Plan Development and Revision

In 1984 the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC) Land and Resource Management Plan was completed. Since then, the environment, our understanding of how to care for the land, scientific research, and people's needs have changed. For these reasons, and to comply with the National Forest Management Act, we are revising the 1984 Plan to result in:

  1. The Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Land Management Plan (Grasslands Plan). This will be the first stand-alone management plan for the Grasslands.
  2. The Pike and San Isabel National Forests Land Management Plan.

New Information!Forest Service Begins Development of a New Planning Rule

The Forest Service has issued a notice of intent (NOI) to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) to develop a new planning rule that will provide a framework for management of national forests
and grasslands. The 60 day public comment period on the NOI will run from December 18, 2009 to February 16, 2010. There will be multiple opportunities for public involvement throughout the rulemaking process.
Visit the planning rule website for further information: http://fs.usda.gov/planningrule

On June 30, 2009, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California vacated the 2008 Planning Rule. The court’s ruling instructed the US Forest Service to reinstate either the 1982 Planning Rule or the 2000 Planning Rule. As a result of the Court’s ruling, we have stopped the objection process on the Grasslands Plan and we will continue to defer holding any further public meetings on the Forests Plan. We will continue to work on planning activities and analyses that are independent of any specific planning rule while we review the planning options available to us at this time. 4. Pike and San Isabel National Forests Travel Analysis Process (TAP) Report

The Pike and San Isabel National Forests Travel Analysis Process (TAP) Report is now final. This TAP is a science-based travel analysis of all major (maintenance Level 3 and above) Forest Service roads. The purpose is to address existing and future road management options by identifying the benefits of access and the risks of ecosystem effects so that an optimum transportation system can be developed.
